How to Store a Matcha Bowl (Chawan)

Storing a ceramic matcha bowl well protects the glaze and keeps it chip-free. Here’s how to store, stack, and display a chawan so it lasts.
Store a clean, fully dry ceramic bowl on a shelf or in a cabinet, ideally not stacked directly on other hard items. Keep it dry to protect the glaze, and use a soft cloth or liner between pieces to prevent chips.
Dry it completely first
The single most important step is to put the bowl away dry. Trapped moisture is what dulls glaze and encourages odors over time. After washing, dry the bowl with a soft cloth and let it air a little before it goes on the shelf.
Where and how to store it
